Full description

For centuries, mental disorders have been a matter of prejudice and social stigma. Treating them was in many cases simply a process of experimentation, leading to methods of therapy that we would now consider extremely cruel. Luckily, the attitude towards mental illness has changed considerably throughout history. The large complex of the Bohnice Psychiatric Hospital is the ideal setting for this historical journey, as it was here that psychiatry played its greatest role in the Czech lands. You will learn in detail about the construction and architecture of the entire area, the establishment of the institution and how it operates today. Beginning with the psychiatric history in ancient Egypt, you will trace its development up to the first asylums. You will also learn about the torments of the 19th and 20th centuries when patients suffered during methods of treatment such as lobotomy and deep sleep therapy. Their hope was the discovery of pharmaceutical treatments. But along with that came also a new set of problems.

After the tour of the exterior grounds of the still-functioning hospital, you will be taken along the walls of an abandoned cemetery, which was used as a burial ground of the former asylum and is associated with many local legends. It is a favorite site for paranormal enthusiasts as many lost souls have never truly found peace here.
